Dental implants are small, rod-like posts that serve as a base for replacement teeth. They are inserted into the jawbone to provide support for a tooth, denture, or bridge.
The dental implant screw is made of titanium and fits into the bone. It has a clip, called an abutment, where the replacement tooth, called a dental crown, fits on. Titanium is often used for dental implants because it is well-tolerated by the body and bonds easily with new bone. With proper care and good oral hygiene, dental implants can last a lifetime.
Immediate Placement
In this procedure, the dental implant is placed at the same time as the tooth extraction. This can be a beneficial option because it allows the titanium implant to heal under the gum for approximately three months, or longer if necessary. This healing process may take longer if grafting or tissue reconstruction is needed. Once it has healed, the dental crown can be fitted. In some cases, it is possible to fit a replacement tooth to the titanium implant immediately, a process called ‘immediate loading’.
The Process
The tooth replacement process involves the extraction of the tooth and cleaning of the socket to ensure that it is free from infection or debris. The bone integrity at the site is then assessed to determine if the implant can be placed immediately, with or without additional tissue augmentation, or if the titanium implant should be placed after the socket has healed.
Grafting may be required in certain circumstances, such as if the outer aspect of the bone socket is fragile after extraction or if the size of the socket is larger than the size of the titanium implant. Bovine bone minerals can be used to fill the gap and thicken the bone, while gum grafting may be necessary for thin, transparent, or dark gums to improve resistance and thickness. These treatments can usually be addressed in a single visit to our dental clinic in Ealing.
Immediate Loading
Immediate loading can be done with a suitable implant if sufficient stability is achieved during surgery. The bonding process between the titanium implant and the jawbone, called osseointegration, takes approximately 2-3 months. During this time, the biting pressure should be kept low. Once the bonding is complete, the porcelain crown is attached to the titanium implant.
Earlier Extraction
If you need to replace a single tooth that was extracted earlier, the same process is followed. The dentist will assess the risk factors and determine if grafting is necessary. An immediate crown can be fitted at the same time as the new dental implant.
